In this modernisation of Othello, set in the modern era in Venice and later in Cyprus, I pair the original, lyrical iambic pentameter with modern language. This Shakespearian play is made new, for the modern ear.

The Tragedy of ‘Othello’ is governed by Iago, the deceitful ensign who corrupts the Venetian army ranks, creating suspicion and causing strife at will.

Hiding behind the guise of ‘honest Iago’, Iago blows corrupting seeds of thought into the ear of the greatly revered ‘Othello’, who henceforth grows to distrust all those he once loved.

It would be endlessly satisfying to define the reasons for Iago’s actions as ‘jealousy’ or ‘racism’, but no one is so simply understood and defined.

Is Iago a collection of the many faces that he presents to the characters of the play? Or are they masks that fill an ominous void? Are you sure you’re safe from the green-eyes monster? Can you ever really be sure that you are safe form Iago’s manipulations?

Sleep with one eye open because something wicked this way comes.

Performed at Leeds University Theatre Group’s 100th anniversary. I also directed the play. For more photographs and trailers please visit my ‘Performances’ page.
